Track Progress with Checklists

Students at Piano Lab are introduced to goal-setting and tracking progress from the first day of piano learning together. Each student receives a personalized progress checklist broken down by units in the Faber Piano Adventures series. When completing a level of books, students get a brand new progress checklist as they "Level Up!"

Learn To Play Familiar Songs

Along with teaching the foundations of piano playing, we help students connect with the music they perform.
For recitals, students get to choose songs they already know and enjoy:
  • Songs from their favorite movies (like Moana, The Lion King, Lord Of The Rings, etc.)
  • Songs from the radio (Taylor Swift, One Direction, Ed Sheeran, and hundreds of others)
  • Songs from their favorite TV shows (Disney shows and movies)
  • Many other genres (religious music, jazz, as well as holiday music)
This variety of song choices helps students invest in their performance, and find joy while playing music they recognize.

Modern Tools to Enhance Learning

We help students learn how to play piano with excellent note recognition, a steady beat, and understanding of theory.

We utilize current best practices in the realm of education, with the latest technology innovations to achieve these goals:
  • High-end Casio PX-870 piano workstations for songwriting and midi-games
  • iPads at every piano station to compose music, review note names and theory, and practice sight reading interactively
  • Seesaw class app personalized to your child's level, with instruction videos and a portal to submit videos and questions between lessons
  • Instruction to use music applications including Piano Maestro, Rhythm Swing, NinGenius, and StaffWars
  • Suggestions on the best pianos to purchase for your child

Piano Contests & Exams

For students who want to get more serious, they have the option to compete in the Minnesota Music Teachers' Association (MMTA) Piano Contest. This is a statewide contest for dedicated piano students of all ages.

I also offer preparation for MMTA Theory Exams and Piano Exams. Both are achievement programs for kids to "level up" and increase their skills and knowledge while having fun at the piano.
